By Dario Petkovic

We've reached the stage where no matter what your small business is, a local off-line enterprise, an internet based store and whatever content management system you happen to be using, it is of the extreme importance to carry out you keyword research properly.

Failing to make an appropriate choice of key phrases will certainly make or break your SEO goals.

For starters, you will be looking to get what is known as a long tail keywords that you want to rank for. This will mean that the keywords will pretty much never have a one word but more likely, two, 3 and probably up to 5 actual words within it.

A good example of a long tail keyword would be commercial lawyers Sydney. This would be a superb keyword phrase for a law firm focusing on this field.

You wouldn't even wish to make an effort to rank for keyword lawyers for example because it would most certainly have a lot of competition and it just wouldn't be specific enough.

All of this brings us to the 4 most essential techniques of keyword research. These rules apply for any site, any sector, and any business venture! Here they are:

Search volume - Opt for a keyword phrase keyword which has ample search quantity. This means that there are enough people searching for this search term or expression. There's no point in aiming to rank for a keyword you think represents your business if nobody is searching for that long tail search term

Relevancy - chose a keyword phrase that's relevant to your internet blog or company. It would appear like an obvious point, however unless you narrow down your choice, you may learn that a number of the unconnected keywords have crept up within your list

Reasonable competition - Initially, you'll want to decide on keyword phrases that suit all of the rules and don't have a lot of competition. You will learn that these key words will also have lesser search level, meaning that though you have ranked for it, you will not get as much website traffic as you might for many of the larger competition and better volume key phrases.

Commercial intent - Here is the most difficult step once choosing your keywords and phrases to begin ranking for. To keep going on our case in point, which one of these two would you conclude that has higher commercial intent: family lawyers or family law? The answer would have to be family lawyers as a man or a woman searching for family law is perhaps only researching about family law and not necessarily seeking the actual legal practitioner right now.
