The Rise of Social Media Agencies

By Ken Godberson

The times are a-changin. Technology continues to grow at exemplary rates and we move further and further into a digital world. The internet has become one of the foundations of everyday life, something that would have been unprecedented fifteen years ago. It is part of almost every aspect of who we are in some way. This is no different for the marketing industry, in fact, even more so. Marketing has changed completely with the rise of the Internet.

Marketing and the Internet have become so entwined with one another. How often do you see an ad on some website? But without a doubt one of the biggest booms for marketers is social media. In short, social media is a platform that allows a user to share content and communicate with other users. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube; all of these and more are examples of social media.

The rise of social media has created a unique change in the marketing industry. Why? Well the answer is quite simple. Despite the fact that the Internet has made our lives easier, we are still busy. To use myself as an example, I am constantly on the move, what with my two jobs, work on my master's degree, and more. As such, it's hard to keep in contact with my friends outside of Facebook and Twitter. This is why marketing is taking a look at this format.

There has begun the steady creation of a new branch of marketers called social media agencies. In short, these agencies specialize in the use of multitudes of social media platforms in order to promote their client's digital visibility. The various tactics used are incalculable. Agencies will follow people on Twitter that talk about the products/services that their clients provide. They will reach out to online journals (a.k.a. blogs) that specialize in what a client sells. All these and more are viable ways to get the client's name out there.

It's not the same world it once was. The digital world has forced the old ways to crumble away and give birth to new forms of industry. Will it be different a decade or two from now? Most likely, but as of now, the key to marketing is digitization. Social media agencies are the way of the present and foreseeable future.
